A measure of body fat based on height and weight, used for health assessment.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared (kg/m²). For Indians, the BMI cutoffs follow Asian standards: below 18.5 (underweight), 18.5-23 (normal), 23-27.5 (overweight), above 27.5 (obese). These are lower than WHO international standards because Indians have higher body fat percentage at lower BMI levels. BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test. It does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution.
