A state-level tax levied on individuals earning income from employment or profession.
Professional tax is a tax levied by state governments in India on individuals engaged in employment, business, or profession. It is deducted from salary by employers and submitted to the state government. Not all states levy professional tax; Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal do. The maximum professional tax payable is Rs 2,500 per year (Rs 208 per month). It is deducted monthly from salary and is tax-deductible under Section 16(iii) of the Income Tax Act.
