A lump sum payment made by an employer to an employee as a token of appreciation for long service.
Gratuity is a statutory benefit payable under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972 to employees who have completed at least 5 years of continuous service with the same employer. The formula is: Gratuity = (Last drawn salary × 15 × years of service) / 26, where salary includes basic + DA. The maximum gratuity amount is Rs 20 lakh (tax-free under Section 10(10)). For employees not covered under the Act, the formula uses 15/30 instead of 15/26.
