Tax deducted by the payer before making certain payments, as per Income Tax Act provisions.
TDS is a mechanism of collecting income tax at the source of income. The payer deducts a percentage of the payment and deposits it with the government on behalf of the recipient. Common TDS rates in India: salary (as per applicable slab), interest on bank deposits (10%), rent (10-30%), professional fees (10%), commission (5%), and contractor payments (1-2%). TDS deducted can be claimed as credit while filing income tax returns. Form 26AS contains the consolidated TDS statement.
